A company really is only as good as the people in it, as Mary Kay Ash, who founded and ran the hugely successful Mary Kay Cosmetics business knew well, gaining numerous personal and business awards, and being included in the “The 100 best companies to work for in America” and one of the 10 best for women to work.
Retaining your best people is the key to the success of any business – and this means having a culture where people want to remain. A culture of real top-to-bottom accountability, ensuring you hire the best people and then getting out of the way so they can do their jobs, of encouraging questions and input, having clear and open communication, and of providing for real career path progression.
Of course, you can never retain everyone – sometimes people will need to move on for their own career goals, but good leaders encourage this when it is best for the person – and sometimes people are just not a great fit for your business, and so need to find a place where they will be more comfortable. The key is to treat people well, with dignity, at all times.
As the well-known business author and speaker, Simon Sinek says, “Company culture matters. How management chooses to treat its people impacts everything for better or for worse.”
Examine your culture – perhaps in the context of the 10 principles covered by the excellent “Begin with WE” book by Kyle McDowell.
Do you have true accountability throughout the business, with an OKR framework? What about pay, working conditions, meetings, working environment, and so on…?
Look at your strategy, too – does it match your culture?
Taking your company from being good to great needs attention in all these areas, but key to it all is your team and how they feel about the business.
How does your company measure up?
