I was reading an article on goal-setting recently which had me thinking about this in the context of running a business…

How do you plan for the year ahead – is it a zero-based, or other, budget approach, the output of a strategy session, a ‘gut-feel’, some other way or a combination of some of these?

Perhaps an important part of the planning process is to imagine where you would like to be in a year’s time (or 3, or 5 years if looking further ahead). What would have made it a great year?

Having established this, you can then build plans to ensure that you can make this a reality.

In other words, you’ll be looking back to look ahead.

Think about incorporating this into your planning process and see what difference it makes.
