“Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough so they don’t have to.” – Sir Richard Branson

One of the things I still see all-too-often is a reluctance by companies to train their people properly – frequently on the basis that this will make them too valuable to competitors and so they’ll leave.

Would you want to do business with a company staffed by people that cannot do the job properly, or would you go to one that has efficient and effective systems and people?

Having the best people, properly trained and knowledgeable, with great systems and processes, and appropriate authority to take decisions, ensures a sustainable advantage over your competitors. Treating them well on top of this is a no-brainer: happy staff are up to 20% more productive, and actively promote the company for which they work, meaning more sales. Also, bear in mind the costs to your business of replacing somebody that leaves run to between 3 and 12 months of salary, depending on the level and complexity of the role.

By investing in your people and empowering them to do their jobs properly, you’re truly investing in a brighter future for your business.
